Elizabeth Gaskell's House
Opening Hours
About
This Victorian house was once home to the 19th-century author Elizabeth Gaskell, now preserved as a museum celebrating her life and literary works. Visitors can explore period rooms filled with artefacts, including interactive elements like opening drawers and browsing books. The basement houses second-hand books for sale. A tea room serves cake, and the garden provides a quiet spot. Volunteers share detailed knowledge about Gaskell’s writing, including her biography of Charlotte Brontë. The house is known for its well-preserved interiors and the enthusiasm of its staff.
Customer Reviews
We had a wonderful visit. It’s an absolute bargain to get in and the cafe was reasonable too. The volunteers have incredible knowledge and are genuinely passionate about the history of Elizabeth Gaskell and the house she lived in. More people should know about this - I can’t recommend it highly enough. AND! You buy a ticket and you can return as much as you want within a year. I’m already planning to go again with some colleagues!
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The museum isn’t that big but has a lot to see and I really appreciated the interactive elements of being able to open drawers, look inside books etc
I had a wonderful time here. The lovely guides were very knowledgeable and the house is beautiful. I actually didn’t know about Elizabeth Gaskell and it was a pleasant surprise to learn about her success as a writer and, to use a modern word, influencer.
