About
This Roman archaeological site in Carlisle city centre is an ongoing excavation uncovering remnants of ancient baths and buildings, including structures potentially linked to Emperor Septimius Severus. The site has revealed layers of history, from predecessor buildings to extensive Roman drains beneath the road. Excavations are periodically reburied to preserve findings, with updates shared online. The project has gained attention through television features and relies on volunteer efforts. Visitors can sometimes access guided tours to see the exposed archaeology before it is protected again. The dig continues to bring Carlisle’s Roman past to light.

An ongoing excavation which is re buried to protect the archaeology. Please visit the Uncovering Roman Carlisle Website for updates on new excavations. It’s possible the Emperor Septimius Severus used this building when inspecting Hadrian’s Wall in the early 3rd century
Great to see the excavations of the baths. Even with the Severan bath now mostly removed, there is much to see with the predecessor building coming to light and the impressive drains of the Road itself. Well worth a visit.
Got an unexpected tour of the site. Volunteers are doing a fabulous job on this incredible find in the centre of this incredible city.
