About

One of Britain’s most atmospheric prehistoric sites, this late Neolithic stone circle consists of 38 standing stones set against the dramatic backdrop of the Lake District fells. Believed to date back to around 3000 BC, it’s thought to have been used for religious ceremonies or astronomical observations. The surrounding landscape, with roaming sheep and panoramic views, adds to its spiritual appeal. Visitors often pause in the centre to take in the scenery, and the site draws particular interest during the summer and winter solstices. Free parking nearby makes access straightforward.

Visited in early January.. very cold.. but stunning. The pictures do not do this place justice. You have to stand in the middle and do a slow 360.. the views and location.. if you are into the beauty of nature it will take your breath away. I can totally understand why the guilt it here 5000 years ago.. it's quite magical 🌟❤️

Wonderful example of a late neolithic stone circle with 38 standing stones. Every time we visit is an experience as the weather and light changes constantly. Very atmospheric and scenic. Dog friendly but sheep present. some parking so accessible for disabled. Can be very wet and windy.

A truly magical place, well looked after by English Heritage. Easy free parking nearby and just a short walk to the Stone Circle on grassy land. Do stand in the centre and do a 360 turn looking outwards, the views are gorgeous.
