About

This museum spans four floors of interactive exhibits covering local history, from medieval medicine to WWII stories and Sellafield’s nuclear legacy. It features VR headsets, games, puzzles and videos, with a dedicated interactive section for hands-on exploration. The top-floor gallery overlooks the harbour and includes telescopes. Temporary exhibitions, like the Titanic display and Chinese New Year craft workshops, run alongside permanent collections. There’s a café and gift shop on-site. Families appreciate the Lego activities and child-friendly events, while adults find the detailed local history exhibits engaging. The space balances education with interactive elements across multiple floors.

This is a really GREAT museum, the Sellafield information was really thorough and interactive. The rest of the museum has VR headsets, games, puzzles, videos. The view from the gallery is really cool and the telescopes can see a mighty long way. We (two adults) were here for 4.5 hours and I didn't get bored of it at all. Kids wouldn't either.

Having visited Whitehaven many times we have never been into the Beacon Museum. We'll be back again. They had a exhibition downstairs which was worth a look, then 4 floors to explore. A brilliant interactive secrion where the kids could explore and be kids. Plus some great views over Whitehaven from the topfloor. We thought we would be about an hour but it easily passed 2 hours. Friendly staff, clean facilities and worth the money. Thank you.

Beakid Chinese New Year Event. Took my two grandaughters 8 and 5 to this two hour craft workshop and meet the animals event. The first hour was devoted to the animals. We learned about birds, snakes and meercats. Thoroughly entertaining for both kids and adults.Well thought out event. Very friendly and informative leaders. Kids were wholly absorbed in the crafts. They made a hobby horse as it is the Year of the Horse. Refreshments provided for both adults and children. This is the third kids event we have attended at The Beacon. Would thoroughly recommend. Good value too.
