I recently visited Mackie Mayor and had quite a mixed experience. On the positive side, the drinks were honestly amazing and came out very quickly. However, the music was turned up far too loud, making it difficult to have a proper conversation with the people I was dining with. Food-wise, the Karaage chicken, nap buns and the curry were excellent — full of flavour and cooked really well. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the ramen and pizza. The ramen, which I’d had before and absolutely loved, was a huge letdown this time. It arrived lukewarm with little to no flavour, which was really disappointing given how good it had been previously. Maybe the kitchen was having an off day, or perhaps standards have slipped, but either way it definitely wasn’t worth the price I paid. As for the pizza, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either — very average and again, not worth the cost. Service was another downside. I struggled to flag down staff throughout my meal, and despite trying several times, I couldn’t get a glass of tap water maybe this is a tactic to try and get you to buy the over priced bottles Overall, while there were some highlights, the negatives outweighed them for me. For the price point, I expected far better. Sadly, I’d give this visit a 3/10.

Mackie Mayor is housed in a beautiful old building, and I really liked the relaxed atmosphere inside. It has a handful of food stalls dotted around, which gives it a bit of a market hall feel. That said, I found the food choices a little underwhelming. For the prices charged, I expected better quality and variety - it felt a touch on the expensive side for what it was. What stood out for me, though, was the drinks. The beer selection is impressive, with plenty on tap, and what I tried was fresh and well-kept. Overall, I'd say Mackie Mayor is a nice spot if you're mainly going for drinks and the setting, but less so if you're expecting a wide range of exciting food options.

A lovely food hall inside a gorgeous building in the Northern Quarter. There’s a wide range of food options but the prices can be a bit expensive for what you actually get. The beer selection is lovey and the overall vibe is great. Service can be slow but that’s to be expected as it can get very busy. 7/10
