About
This Japanese tea house specialises in matcha-based desserts and drinks, with a focus on traditional flavours. The menu includes matcha soft serve ice cream, sundaes, and houjicha lattes topped with cheese foam. There are also matcha cheesecakes and hojicha tiramisu lattes available. The outdoor seating area makes it a spot for warm-weather visits. Located near Chinatown, it’s known for its authentic matcha flavour in drinks like the iced matcha latte with oat milk.
Customer Reviews
Brilliant location. Lovely Matcha Ice cream. This was honestly my first Matcha ice cream. And loved it. Very well served. Out door seating for summer. Different choices of cakes.
My favourite desert place in circle square! The staff here are always helpful and friendly. The hojicha iced latte (£5.50 for a regular/ £6.10 for a large) which is lower in caffeine and has a nuttier but smooth flavour aswell as the Matcha Chocolate Gateau (£7.20) is my go to. Two tips✍️: If you download the embargo app (their loyalty app), you can get a free desert or drink after 10 visits. If you have the NeoTaste app, they have offers for this branch. This includes getting 30% off your entire bill or 2 for 1 on matcha cones and lattes 😍 There is parking on Granby Row and it’s usually quiet but it’s expensive (£4.20 for one hour) the bus/walking from town is a better option.
One of the things I particularly enjoy about travelling is wandering around, taking in a new environment and bumping into places that are like little hidden gems. Tsujiri was one such place that we accidentally stumbled across, an unassuming little store, clean and simple but not without its charm with subtle touches of minimalist Japanese design. Service was fine, a touch slow, but it was pretty busy for a sunday evening and there was just one person working so he was maybe a little flustered. The improvement that I'd like to suggest to the management is that while the menu is beautifully designed with lovely photos, however there's a couple of issues. Firstly the text on the printed menu is pretty small and I was only just able to read it. Secondly, the menu only has photos and the names of the items, I think the inclusion of a description would help a lot. They're expecting the customer to have quite a lot of prior knowledge of Japanese cuisine. All that aside, the most important thing is the food... how was my ice cream? I got the Tsujiri Sundae, the foundation was a delicious matcha soft serve, utterly smooth and creamy with a satisfying depth of matcha flavour. The hidden surprise was a layer of sweet red beans buried at the bottom. This might sound weird, but it's a classic East Asian dessert staple and their rendition is light and not too sweet. (High praise from an Asian auntie!) Topping off the sundae were four pieces of soft and slightly chewy Warabi Mochi alternately dusted with matcha powder and kinako, toasted soy bean flour. The addition of the little crunchy bits of roasted rice gave the sundae an occasional delightful pop-corn flavoured crunch. The contrast of flavours and textures came together to form what I think is probably the best dessert I've had this year... While I was writing this review, I'd been going back and forth between 4 and 5 stars... wavering on whether or not the little niggles were enough to knock off the one star... but ultimately, the quality of the matcha ice cream firmly plonked it back in place.
