About

A university library on Oxford Road, the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons provides study spaces with computers for students and researchers. It stays open around the clock, making it a practical spot for late-night work, especially during exam periods. The building has a mix of seating options, including desks with computers and quieter areas for focused study. Some students associate it with memorable all-night study sessions. There’s a cafeteria on-site, and the space is generally considered well-equipped for academic work.

I visited the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons for the first time during the Christmas holidays in 2024 since AMBS was closed at that time. AGLC is a cozy place to study, whether alone or in groups. It offers 330 computers in both quiet and public areas, along with numerous individual desks for a more private study environment. On the ground floor, you'll find a café, four microwaves, and boiling water available. Additionally, each floor is equipped with printers and vending machines for snacks, cold and hot drinks. The facility is open 24 hours, but if you arrive late in the morning, you may find it challenging to secure a study space.

The AGLC is one of the best facilities for 24-hour study and work spaces for the students/researchers at the University of Manchester. There are variety of seating arrangements (with and without desktop computers) where different sorts of sofa, chairs, and tables are available. There are reading rooms that can be pre booked by the students and a cafe at the Ground Floor. There are also some seeping pods for power naps amidst long work and study hours!
