About

Carlisle Cathedral is one of England’s smallest cathedrals, founded in 1123 and built in Norman style with local red sandstone. Known for its exquisite choir, stained-glass east window, and intricate ceiling, it houses historic artefacts and a treasury. Visitors can explore with a written guide, admire the misericords, or stroll the grounds. The cathedral welcomes dogs and hosts graduations. Volunteers provide insights, and light refreshments like scones are available. Donations support its upkeep. A place of tranquillity, it remains an active episcopal seat with regular services.

A house of god and episcopal seat since 1133. One of the smallest in Emgkand and Wales. Exquisite choir and ceiling. East window voted most beautiful in 2026. Clergy and volunteers are welcoming and helpful both spiritually and turistically. Cathedral is centrally located in historical city centre.

It may be the second smallest cathedral but that does not detract from how stunning it is. A real architectural gem. A very helpful lady who volunteers on Saturdays was most knowledgeable. As I said when we were leaving, the only thing that would have made our visit better was if the cathedral organist had been playing what looked to be a most impressive instrument.

Stunning. Simply fabulous. I've rarely felt such a tranquil feeling of peace as in this extraordinary building. It is breathtaking the detail to be found here. I'm more spiritual than religious but I was moved in a mysterious way.
