About

A historic Grade I-listed monument built in 1682, this stone pillar stands on the site of an earlier medieval cross in Carlisle’s pedestrianised centre. Inscribed with the name of the former mayor and topped by a lion holding the city’s arms, it features sundials and serves as a focal point in a leafy former marketplace. Surrounded by shops and cafés, it’s a spot where people pause to sit and take in the surroundings, with easy access to nearby attractions like the castle. The monument marks the city’s historic core while blending into its modern-day rhythm.

Built in 1682 on the site of a previous medieval cross. It is inscribed, Joseph Reed Mayor 1682 and features sundials, topped by a Lion sitting holding a scroll with the city arms. The monument is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England. If you're a tourist, (like us) we thought it was a really lovely little square, so we sat outside having coffee 👌.

An attractive, leafy former marketplace surrounded by historic buildings, shops and cafes. I stopped here on my way to the castle. The perfect place to enjoy my packed lunch and watch the world go by!
