About
Carlisle Railway Station, officially known as Carlisle Citadel Station, is a historic transport hub with striking architecture and ties to the city’s past, named after the nearby bastions. It serves as a key junction for routes including the Carlisle to Settle line, Tynes Valley line, and Cumbria’s west coast line, with connections to Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Preston. The station features a concourse with information boards, ramped access to platforms, and a small café. Steam locomotives occasionally pass through, adding to its character. A ticket office operates year-round, alongside a WHSmiths and a stall selling veggie sausage rolls by platform 4.

I spend way too much time here admiring the plethora of steam locomotives that visit. It's a fabulous station, though. It has beautiful architecture and interesting history. Located a short distance from the City Centre, it's a big part of historic Carlisle. Close to various buses and a taxi rank, as well as connecting Scot Rail, Northern Rail, Avanti West Coast, and Transpennine Express trains. It's the northern end of the famous Settle to Carlisle line, too. Super helpful staff, a small WHSmiths, a café, independent hot drinks van, and Pie Demand. Check out the books on platforms 3 & 4, and you'll find craft fairs, choirs, bands, markets, and other events held between the entrance and platform 4. Super clean toilets including disabled and baby changing facilities. You do need to be aware that untraditionally platform 1 is the farthest from the current front entrance and ticket hall. Also, be mindful when using the station when Carlisle United Football Club is playing at home, as it gets super busy.
Quite busy train 🚊 station, Train to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Preston will be easily available from this station. Ticket office is also remained open on holidays. Platforms are accessible through stairs and ramps.
Great station. Stunning architecture and great history. Ideal hub to access the Carlisle to Settle line, Tynes Valley line and Cumbria west coast line and many other area's. Great little coffee shop. Facilities are kept clean and tidy, as is the station.
