About

This surviving section of Manchester’s Roman fort wall sits beneath a railway arch, now preserved as a historical landmark. The remaining concrete structure is fenced within a car park, its ancient origins contrasting with the modern surroundings. Though unmarked, the fragment offers a tangible link to the city’s Roman past, making it a point of interest for history enthusiasts.

Very cool that it exists, but not well presented. It’s behind a security fence in a random parking lot and had cars blocking the view when I went. There is no signage or information and I was left wondering if I was in the right place at all. It was slightly overgrown and looks like it could be any old piece of abandoned concrete. It’s accessed from Collier St and it’s easy enough to quickly pop over if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t recommend a dedicated trip just to see this.

All that’s left is a neglected lump of concrete behind a car park fence under a railway arch. Really should be better preserved.
