National Trust - Castlefield Viaduct
Opening Hours
About
The Castlefield Viaduct is a repurposed Victorian railway bridge transformed into an elevated green space in Manchester. Now a project by the National Trust, it features endemic plants and herbs, with views across the city. The viaduct, decommissioned in 1969, has been reimagined as a tranquil garden walkway, with plans for further expansion. Visitors can explore the greenery and learn about the structure’s history through displays. The space blends industrial heritage with nature, creating a quiet retreat amid the urban surroundings. Tickets are available for guided tours, and a lift provides accessibility.

This is a great and very interesting attraction say the heart of the historic Castlefield district of Manchester. It's more than a little reminiscent of the elevated garden in downtown Manhattan and the range of interesting sights along with the juxtaposition of ancient and modern is truly inspiring. Very much recommended.
What a wonderful place! The National Trust team have done an excellent job converting this abandoned railway bridge into a magnificent elevated garden full of endemic trees and herbs. The views are stunning and there are great opportunities to learn and get engaged with. Already been there twice, even though I had to travel three hours to Manchester - absolutely worth it!
What an amazing hidden gem such a brilliant idea to restore this former Victorian viaduct I can’t wait to see the phase 2 expansion when it’s completed. A tranquil green oasis hidden away in the centre of Manchester, we are National Trust members and wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t seen it on the app although it’s free for all to visit so please go it’s a lovely peaceful haven to escape from the hustle & bustle of city life (tip: it’s currently closed Mondays & Tuesdays)
