About

Thacka Beck Nature Reserve is a wetland sanctuary in Penrith, known for its peaceful walking paths alongside ponds and wildlife habitats. The reserve functions as part of local flood defences while supporting deer, birds, and Belted Galloway cows. Visitors often spot trains passing nearby. The area includes overgrown paths and a mix of natural features, from wetlands to open spaces, making it a quiet spot for observing nature. Dogs are permitted, though some owners neglect cleanup. The reserve lacks facilities like benches and toilets but remains a regular walking spot for locals.

Thacka Reserve is nice little oasis of calm in the bustling town of Penrith! It is part of the flood defences and creates a pond and wetlands for birds animals and plants, I often see Deer first thing in the mornings and the grasslands are usually home for 6 old English cows ( Belted Galloways presently) It lays beside the railway line so you can also watch the different types of trains coming and going through! This in no way detracts from the reserve itself.

Too many selfish folk let dogs off so they don't have to pick up after them and the paths are beginning the yearly overgrowth. Otherwise not a bad area for a walk.
