Had lunch at the Wainwright for the first time on a recent visit to Keswick for the Victorian Christmas Fayre. The town was incredibly busy, but I arrived here just as the doors were opening, and I managed to get a seat near the bar. It's a traditional no frills pub with comfy leather seating, and lots of maps, photos and info about fell walker and writer Alfred Wainwright on the walls. There was even a video about his walks playing above the bar. The pub is small, and it soon filled up. Lots of people with dogs. There's a very wide choice of ales, but I opted for a glass of red wine. They serve good old-fashioned pub meals here, using locally sourced meat and fish, but there are also vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and a children's menu. I decided on the Sunday roast. Because it was so busy, service was that bit slower, but it was well worth the wait! Well cooked and hot, with lovely tender slices of beef on a bed of mash, a big Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, broccoli, carrots, red cabbage and lashings of gravy. The veg was just right, not undercooked. Very generous portions. And this pub had a great convivial atmosphere, with friendly staff and friendly diners too. Would come here again.

Situated in the heart of Keswick, The Wainwright pub is a cosy establishment it gives off very much the vibe of turned up beanies and hand tattoos as you come in listening to the bountiful playlist of punk rock and indie music. But don’t let that detour you as the food, the people and location is rather fabulous. I went with my mum and dad and we all had a Sunday roast and what can I say other than just amazing. I recommend highly and you always take my word for it.
