About

Walla Crag is a hiking spot near Keswick with sweeping views over Derwentwater and the surrounding fells. The walk starts from the National Trust Great Wood car park, ascending steeply through Cat Gill’s rocky paths and waterfalls before reaching open hilltops. Heather covers the slopes in season, and the route can be boggy in places. Dogs are welcome, and the circular walk back towards Keswick takes in varied terrain. Parking is free for National Trust members. The climb is manageable for most walkers, with rewarding panoramas even on cloudy days.

Fabulous views of Keswick and Derwentwater from Walla Crag. Parked in the National Trust Great Wood car park and went up via Cat Gill (quite steep and rocky in places so beware if you experience mobility issues). Rewarded with great views back down the Derwentwater

A must do, especially in good weather! My first time in the lakes, and first hike in the area around Keswick. I havent been active for a while, so this was a great intro back into it. Did the loop from Keswick town along the lake front to Ashness Bridge, and climb up to Walla Crag, back into town. Pic shows route.

This a great Wainwright for anyone of any walking ability to tick off - Either take on the climb straight from the National Trust car park, follow the waterfall up through the forest until you reach the rolling hilltops and stunning views of Keswick and beyond, or take an amble through the Great Woods and towards Castlerigg, before turning the fell to the top. We did the full loop today with two dogs in less than perfect weather, and it was still a wonderfully enjoyable walk, with a little bit of everything a Lakes walk has to offer - Ascents, Forestry, Waterfalls, Fells, Views, Rolling Farmland and Babbling Brooks - The Walla Crag walk is a must!
