Customer Reviews
I’ve been coming to Fika for around two years and almost always ordered the same thing, the grilled halloumi, because it was consistently good. I hadn’t visited for about six months, but today’s experience was genuinely disappointing and felt like a noticeable drop in standards. The café itself looked scruffy and tired. Chairs were falling apart and the paintwork was dirty and grubby, which immediately gave the impression that corners are being cut. When I went to order, the waitress, a Scottish lady, was pouring milk into a jug behind the counter. I stood and waited politely, at which point she said “I’ll get to you when I can” in a way that made me feel like an inconvenience rather than a customer. I then asked, “Oh sorry, do you come to the table now?” and was told bluntly, “No, you come to me.” I actually ended up apologising for taking up her time, which really should not happen in a hospitality setting. I paid £14.30 for the grilled halloumi. I order this dish specifically because it usually comes with a generous and excellent chilli sauce. This time the sauce was almost non existent. I asked if it was possible to have a little more and explained that there was usually much more than this. I was told I could, but it would cost an extra 50p. Out of principle, I declined and said I simply would not be coming back. When another waitress cleared my plate and asked if everything was ok, I explained that it wasn’t. The halloumi was barely grilled and the sauce was almost absent. There was no apology, just “I’ll tell them in the kitchen.” £14.30 for a piece of toast with avocado hummus, two poached eggs and a few small pieces of halloumi is already a stretch in Cockermouth. I had always justified it because the food used to be good. Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case. A real shame, but I won’t be returning.
