About

A striking public sculpture and functional landmark, this slender tower of stacked frosted glass blocks serves as part of Manchester’s civic district heating network, providing renewable energy to nearby civic buildings. Known for its ethereal appearance, it transforms with the light, appearing subtle during the day and illuminated at night. Situated near the Castlefield basin, it has become a modern focal point for those exploring the area, blending art with sustainable infrastructure. Its sleek design and dual purpose make it a notable feature in Manchester’s urban landscape.

The Tower of Light is Manchester's most enigmatic and ethereal public sculpture. Situated on a busy traffic island at the edge of the Castlefield basin, this slender, 40-metre column of stacked, frosted glass blocks appears to change entirely with the time of day and weather. By daylight, it can seem almost translucent and pale, a quiet geometric form against the city skyline. But as dusk falls and its internal LEDs illuminate, it undergoes a stunning transformation. It glows with a soft, internal radiance, becoming a serene, monolithic beacon. The effect is not garish or flashy, but calming and contemplative—a column of captured moonlight. For me, its power lies in this subtle duality. It is a fixed piece of architecture that feels transient; a solid object that conveys pure light. Designed by the artist Peter Freeman, it serves as a symbolic marker for the city's first public supply of electricity from nearby Knott Mill in 1893. It cleverly commemorates that energy not with industrial machinery, but with its beautiful, silent result. While you cannot walk around or through it, it rewards a moment of pause. Seen from the tram window, from a nearby bar terrace, or while crossing the street, it offers a brief, quiet moment of modern artistry. It lacks the narrative weight of a traditional monument, instead providing a purely sensory, atmospheric punctuation mark in the urban landscape. A beautiful, understated, and strangely peaceful presence.

This is a pretty nice sculpture on the side of the road, we saw it during daylight so I'm not sure if it's better at night if it lights up or anything, but it looks nice anyway!

On our way to the Castlefield Urban Heritage Park where the Roman Fort is located, we dropped by this place to see the Tower of Light. At night, it looks spectacular but during the day it’s just a pretty tower.
