About

The George Hotel and Bar 1597 is a historic hotel housed in a listed building with uneven floors that hint at its age. It has recently refurbished rooms and an on-site car park. The attached Bar 1597 serves a large menu with varied choices, including Sunday lunch and afternoon tea with scones. The hotel is dog-friendly and has hosted festive stays over Christmas. The bar’s name references the building’s origins, and its old-fashioned character blends with modern updates. Situated near Penrith’s town square, it serves as both accommodation and a dining spot.

I ended a 6 day camping trip with a night of luxury in this hotel. The room was excellent value, clean and very dog friendly. The receptionists were very friendly. I booked a table for dinner and ordered a chef’s excellence chicken supreme. We waited over an hour for our food. It was tasty but not haute cuisine. The breakfast options were plentiful and there was no wait for cooked breakfast. Overall I would recommend this hotel for its location, beautiful rooms and dog friendly but worth eating out at night.

It was nice we got a newly refurbished room but we were there really late to check in due to cancelled train we had an awful experience! However the staff at George inexperienced could find my booking and wanted me to leave in a few hours after 12am in the dark another staff member came found the booking - he said that staff doesn’t have access - rather than admit he didn’t have access he wanted to kick me out! Even tough I showed him my booking and shared the booking reference! After that stares it was ok.. the staff were lovely! Forgot the veg sausages in my breakfast! It was so delicious we didn’t notice until after breakfast! Anyway 7 out of 10! This was only because of that staff member and the sausages! The place was vintage and homely but very clean!

We stayed at the George with friends for a 2 night break on New Years Day. |We managed to park up in the hotel car park, which at just £3 for the entire stay was excellent value. |Our room (20) was recently refurbished to a really high standard, and was huge. The bed was exceptionally comfortable, with all toiletries provided in the bathroom. There was some road noise, but that didn’t bother us as we expected this due to the location. (Quieter rooms are at the rear of the hotel). |Breakfast was excellent, and we were really impressed with the main restaurant room, which has retained a lot of its original character. |All staff we came across were friendly and helpful, and were a credit to the hotel. |We loved the old worldly charm of this hotel, and it was like a breath of fresh air compared to some of the more modern characterless hotels. |The bus station is only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel, and from there we enjoyed a day in Keswick with buses running every 30 mins. |If I was being picky it would have been nice to have had more than just one toilet roll in our room. but this was clearly an oversight. |Without a doubt we’ll be returning to this hotel in the future, and would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area.
