About

A historic lighthouse at the end of Whitehaven’s North Pier, this landmark is a focal point for walks along the harbour walls, with sweeping views of the coast and boats in the port. The curved pier is a popular route for strolls, though it can get windy. The lighthouse itself draws photographers and artists, while the surrounding area is frequented by sea anglers. Nearby parking and harbour-side cafes make it a convenient starting point for exploring the coastline. The structure remains accessible for walks at any time.

Visited the Whitehaven harbour and North Pier lighthouse while on holiday in Cumbria and really enjoyed walking around the area. There’s plenty of parking available in different spots, and we chose to park across from Tesco in the pay-and-display car park. It’s very convenient for getting to the harbour, and from there it’s just a short walk to the pier and lighthouse. The walk around the harbour is lovely, with great views out over the water and the surrounding coastline. Even though it was a bit overcast when we visited, the scenery still looked beautiful. The path leads out along the pier, where you can see the lighthouse up close and watch the waves coming in. There were a few people fishing off the pier that day, which added to the relaxed, local feel of the place. Along the way there are a couple of cafes and hotels right by the harbour, ideal if you want to grab a drink or bite to eat while enjoying the view. The ground can be uneven in a few places, especially near the outer sections of the pier, but it’s still easy enough to navigate with a bit of care. There are both rocky and sandy beach areas nearby. The tide was in during our visit, so we didn’t get down to the sand, but it looked like a great spot to explore at low tide. Overall, it’s a peaceful, scenic walk with plenty of photo opportunities — definitely worth a stop if you’re visiting Whitehaven.

Lovely walk around the harbour walls with far reaching views of the coastline and back into the harbour. Plenty of parking, nice cafes to choose from around the harbour. Great start point leading onto the coast path

Wonderful place to have a wander around, the walk to the lighthouse could be nerve wracking for some as it's a walk along the sea wall. But lovely for a jaunt in good weather, and open for walking at all times. The port itself is interesting to walk around too, lovely views all round.
