About
This historic pub and hotel sits in a central location near Manchester Cathedral, the AO Arena, and the Christmas markets. Known for its convenient position next to the Arndale Centre, it provides easy access to the city’s main attractions. The rooms, including family options on the top floor, are clean and spacious, with views of the surrounding area. The building retains its traditional character, featuring steep staircases and older architectural details. The pub serves platters with cheese, meat, and wine, alongside a selection of drinks. Regular deals are available, and the staff are accommodating. Its proximity to key landmarks makes it a practical choice for visitors exploring the city.
Customer Reviews
All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Huge shout out to Liam who assisted us with surprising the birthday girl. The room (family room top floor) itself was clean, it did lack electric sockets but that’s to be expected in a listed building and I echo the previous review regarding the steep stairs which caused much amusement when we returned after our night out!
I’ll start with the positive, it’s right next to the Arndale centre and about as central as you can get. Don’t use their recommended “discount” parking though, the Arndale carpark is cheaper. The staff were also pleasant and helpful. |Now the positive is out of the way, let’s get to the rest. Yes, it’s a 200 year old building but the rooms and hallways look like they were last decorated when queen Victoria was on the throne. Peeling wallpaper, threadbare carpets with some mystery stains, and bathrooms that were plumbed in by a blind plumber who used dodgy caulking as a substitute for tiling. The “power shower” has the water pressure of a gnat peeing and took a full 7 minutes to produce any hot water. I get the building is 200 years old, but so are several other hotels I’ve stayed at and they’ve invested in good quality bathrooms and header tanks to improve the water pressure. The mitre hotel just put a sign up saying “the hotel is 200 years old, run the water for longer”. Don’t count on washing your hair, you really will struggle!! Thanks to the single glazed windows you’re going to be freezing in winter, as the central radiators don’t work and the tiny electric heater provided doesn’t really heat a room with high ceilings. You’ll also enjoy all the noise of the surrounding streets until the early hours so best plan on being out late yourself! You’d also best be fit and able to walk up (wobbly) stairs as you’ll need to lug your stuff up a fair few of em! Basically, other than the location and the staff, there really isn’t a lot going for here, certainly not at £150 a night!
We have never visited this pub before but we will be back. The welcome was great, our cheese, meat and wine platter was amazing. The drinks are reasonably priced. We were seated in a little alcove which was lovely. The customers were all ages and it had really great friendly vibe. The music was brilliant and then a singer came who was fab. Couldn’t fault it.
