About
Wellington Lodge is the last surviving building from Wellington Pit, a historic colliery in Whitehaven. The pit was infamous for its dangerous conditions, including the 1910 disaster that claimed 136 lives. Designed by architect Sydney Smirke, the lodge now stands as a quiet reminder of the area’s mining heritage. Nearby, informational panels and a memorial detail the tragedy. While the interior is inaccessible, the site draws visitors interested in industrial history and local legacy. The weathered structure and surrounding markers provide a tangible link to Whitehaven’s coal-mining past.

Another old mine building in Whitehaven, this time the remains of the Wellington Pit. Further down the hill, below this, are information panels about the Wellington Pit Disaster and a memorial. You cannot access the inside of Wellington Lodge.
Wellington Pit was known as one of the most dangerous pits in the kingdom. An explosion and fire in 1910 killed 136 men and boys. Wellington Lodge is the only remaining mine building. Designed by Sydney Smirke, the building acted as the entrance lodge to the pit.
